Agriculture

The Agriculture Portfolio is orinted towards poverty reduction and empowerment through the provision of technical expertise and support to communities in setting up sustainable agricultural initiatives. Activities encompass small livestock rearing, Piggery, agro-processing, nutrition gardens, apiculture, small grains and conservation farming technologies. The Portfolio partners with research organizations in research and adoption of appropriate technologies that will improve livelihoods.

The department has distributed small livestock to 50 households in Umzingwane district, the project is expected to benefit 200 households. In a bid to improve the income generation capacity of households an oil press was procured and seeds were distributed to households to enable them to plant sunflower seeds and process the seeds into edible oils.

Under its food security enhancement, the department is helping Child Headed Households in 7 districts with inputs and technical expertise to produce their food requirements and also to develop agro-based enterprises. Seventy-four households have so far benefited under this program
